“THESE GIRLS ARE FRIENDS OF MINE”

We have been posting a track-by-track analysis of our album “Boredom and Joy” in sequence. Keep checking back for new descriptions. Here’s Antonia’s analysis of the album’s final track:

“THESE GIRLS ARE FRIENDS OF MINE”

Piers brought this song to the band as what we call a “bedroom track” and we were bewitched by it’s gentle pulsing feeling and vague lyrical story. I love that this song seems stuck somewhere between darkness and light. Like when something profound has happened to you and you’re not sure whether to feel sorrow or joy. I think sometimes you feel most alive in that emotional no-man’s land.

We gave the song a bit of a rhythmic lift in pre-production, then did a last minute change to song structure right before recording the vocals (we turned the pre-chorus into the chorus and turned the chorus into the long outro). Not going to lie: I felt quite verklempt while recording the vocals on this one – looking down onto the quiet mid-winter side street in manhattan’s east village, wondering what is to become of it all.
